| notes | The Hope-Goldthorpe scale was devised for use in the Oxford Mobility Study. Occupations were ranked by a sample of adults from the Oxford Electoral Register according to their "general desirability" as men's occupations. These occupational groups were then collapsed into 36 categories, which were arranged into rank order of "desirability". The categories are assumed to provide a high degree of differentiation in terms of both occupational function and employment status. A discussion of the methods involved and of the validity and reliability associated with the scale may be found in: Goldthorpe J H and Hope K (1974) The social grading of occupations, Oxford Studies in Mobility, London: Oxford University Press |
