| description | This field is a code that indicates the degree of severity involved in a Neonatal death (death at 27 days or under) based on the ICD codes identified for that death. Since the new certificate for stillbirths was introduced in January 1986, making information available about both the child's and the mother's condition, it has been more problematic to derive a single underlying cause, based on the assumption of a chain of events leading to the death. This variable is derived by an algorithm based on the work of Jonathan Wigglesworth which uses a hierarchical procedure to attempt to find the most accurate way of categorising the underlying cause. |
