Code notes01-11; 00 = Record contains spaces, or codes not catered for The 1980 Goldthorpe classes were produced by Goldthorpe and Llewellyn by combining the 36 categories of the Hope-Goldthorpe scale to create an 11-class schema reflecting individuals who broadly share similar market and work situations. It is important to highlight that: 1. As with the Hope-Goldthorpe Score, this class schema was devised for men. 2. The 1980 schema is a refined version of the 7-category 1970 Goldthorpe class. (Three of the original classes have been subdivided.) For cross-cultural comparisons Goldthorpe and Llewellyn (1987) suggest combining classes I and II, and classes V and VI. However, it is desirable to distinguish the agricultural component within classes IV and VII and, if possible, to separate small proprietors into those with and without employees.
