notesICD Rule 3 is used to ensure the consistent coding of the underlying cause of death in cases where more than one cause of death is stated. The rule states that where a condition stated in Part I of Question 8 is clearly a sequel of the condition in Part II, the latter is to be preferred as the underlying cause of death If Rule 3 has been applied the original underlying cause of death stated in Part I of Question 8 is given by ORCAD3IM and the final underlying cause of death (UCDE4CIM) is one ofthe multiple causes of death stated in Part II of Question 8.
