| Code notes | Deaths 1971-1981: Not applicable, see MLC8A1DE Deaths 1981 - 2 Dec 1986: Indicates the position on the death draft of the multiple cause of death code to which it applies 'A' = The multiple cause code is taken from line Ia of the deaths draft 'B' = Taken from line Ib of the death draft 'C' = Taken from line Ic 'Z' = Taken from line II of the death draft ' ' = The multiple cause code is taken to be the same as that of the preceding multiple cause code Note: 1 'A' is always the first alpha code 2 'A', 'B', 'C' and 'Z' alpha codes appear only once per death record and in the order shown, although they need not all be present 3 An alpha code of ' ' can appear any number of times after one of the other prefixes 4 1981-1984: 'M' prefix can appear any number of times per record but must be immediately preceded by a code with a prefix other than 'M'. Two 'M' prefixes cannot be together 5 1981-1984: The code immediately before an 'M' prefix will be a Chapter 2 cancer code (ICD 1400 - 2399).
