�� Mortality coding for the Longitudinal Study, first decade

��

�� Cause of death coding, 8th revision

��

The underlying cause of death was assigned according to the 8th

Revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) using

the coding rules as set out in Volume 1 of that Classification.� The

range of codes = 000 - E999.

��

Certain modifications were made to the ICD categories, as follows:

��

412� - According to ICD8, Volume 1, category 412 should take 4th

�� digits 0 or 9.

��

�� The 4th digits actually used were 1, 2, 3, 4 (see attached

�� list A).

��

519� - According to ICD8, Volume 1, category 519 should take 4th

�� digits 1, 2 and 9.

��

�� The 4th digits actually used were 1, 2, 7, 8, 9.� Digits 1,

�� 2 and 9 were used according to ICD.� Digits 7 and 8 were

�� applied to separate "Obstructive airways disease" from the

�� other chronic and obstructive respiratory disease:-

5197 (Chronic) obstructive lung disease��

�� (Chronic) obstructive pulmonary disease

�� Chronic (non-specific) lung disease

�� Chronic (non-specific) pulmonary disease

5198 (Chronic) obstructive airways disease

N800-N959 - No 4th digits were used for these categories

Multiple cause coding was effected by using ICD codes as above plus

OPCS generated codes identifiable by a preceding left-hand bracket

(see List B).� These are known as the "bracket codes" and were used

to amplify ICD codes where applicable, always following the ICD codes

to which they relate.

ICD codes could also be used as amplifiers within a bracket.

�� Stillbirth coding, 8th revision

The underlying cause was taken from Chapters XIV and XV of the ICD

(740-779).� The leading '7' common to all these categories was omitted

leaving a 3 character code to which was added a 4th digit as follows:-

Multicause in stillbirth coding was effected by using codes from

Chapters XIV and XV of the ICD but, additionally, any ICD code could

be used within a bracket.

OPCS generated codes were also used within a bracket from a list

especially compiled for stillbirths (see List C).
